LISTEN – THE REEL REPORT WITH RIA RENOUF – FRIDAY, JANUARY 15 2016

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is no longer king domestically. It’s all about Leo and that bear.

Winners and Losers at the Box Office:

So…it finally happened: The Revenant – with its $75 million dollars total at the box office – took over the top spot at the box office on Monday. This ended Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ number one reign for the last three weeks.

And what a movie to take over for The Force – I mean, come on. The Revenant has had some amazing awards buzz, both at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. It’s leading the pack with 12 nods. (I did up a review on it, and you can take a look at that here.)

But don’t give up on Star Wars: The Force Awakens oh so fast! It’s not doing poorly at all in the number two spot. As of this post, it’s made $822 million domestically to date, and $957 million foreign, for a grand total of about $1.779 billion worldwide.

Coming in at number three: comedy Daddy’s Home with Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, which has done about $160 million internationally – still a pretty good chunk of change.

At number four: The Big Short – with five nods for this year’s Academy Awards, its stock has a shot at climbing a touch. This is the movie with Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, and Steve Carrell – about the housing market crisis of 2008, and how a bunch of guys decided to bet AGAINST the system. It’s done about $54 million total worldwide at the box office.

At number five: Sisters – with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, this one tells the story of two sisters who have a weekend to clean out all the stuff from their family home – and then they decide to have a party! It’s made $84 million to date at the box office worldwide.
