BOX OFFICE REPORT FOR AUGUST 12TH, 2016

Will you get your fill at the box office this week? Doubtful. I’m still hungry for a solid summer hit.

BOX OFFICE WINNERS AND LOSERS

Suicide Squad is still the big story at the box office, having amassed $170 million so far. Jason Bourne and Bad Moms continue their slow slide out of the box office, at a time where the pacing is so snail-like, odds are they’ll each see another two to three weeks in the top five. The Secret Life of Pets and Star Trek: Beyond bring up the rear, and those, too, are slowly on the way out.

OUT IN THEATRES

Sausage Party

This film boasts an all-star voice cast, including Kristen Wiig, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek. Food finds out what we humans really do to it. I didn’t enjoy this movie, for the most part, and was so disappointed – especially since I had been looking forward to watching it for months. I’m recommending a pass. Read my review here.

Pete’s Dragon

Oh look. Another remake. However, I’m hearing good things. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford, the film follows a young boy who has lived in a forest for six years – seemingly alone. A nice lady finds him, and she and her family learn more about the young boy’s friend, a dragon named Elliott.

Now, I don’t typically cover limited releases, but there are a few that have grabbed my attention.

Florence Foster Jenkins

Starring Meryl Streep, this is probably going to end up being yet another one she adds to her Oscar nod collection. The trailers look great, and she looks like she’s having fun in this role. Streep plays an heiress who wants to be an opera singer, and hopes to do so with her husband’s help. There’s just one thing: she’s not a great singer. Check out some showtimes here.

Anthropoid

A wartime thriller, it stars Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan. This one covers the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich during World War Two. Heydrich was a high-ranking Nazi official. Click here for some of the showtimes.

The Infiltrator

Starring Bryan Cranston, it tells the story of U.S. Customs Service Special Agent Robert Mazur works under an alias to hide dirty cash. He ends up taking on a drug lord – among other things. It’s showing in a few theatres in Metro Vancouver, too. Click here for more info.

TRAILERS THAT HAVE PEOPLE TALKING

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Finally! It’s only August, but we really are only about three-and-a-half months away from the release of the next chapter in the rebooted Star Wars franchise. Lots of new stuff to see in this trailer, which came out on Thursday. Also – THE LAST CLIP, MAN! (Well, we knew that had to be coming…)

Also, the new trailer for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is out.

OUT ON BLURAY, DVD, DIGITAL DOWNLOAD

Next week we’ve got The Angry Birds Movie, which was a hit with the Angry Bird-gaming crowd earlier this year. Read my thoughts on this film here.

There are also a LOT of older movies coming out: Saved!, with Mandy Moore and Macaulay Culkin; Patch Adams with Robin Williams; Beethoven – yep, that doggie movie, and The Money Pit, starring Tom Hanks. Such a funny movie – I just purchased The Money Pit a while back, and I enjoyed it.
