BOX OFFICE REPORT FOR OCTOBER 28TH, 2016

This week: will Tom Hanks light up the big screen with Inferno? Also, it’s your chance to get “Wonderwalled.”

BOX OFFICE WINNERS AND LOSERS

Give it another week or so before we start seeing films that have people flocking to the theatres in droves. At number one right now, it’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, with nearly $30 million dollars domestically since it opened in theatres a week ago. Hot on Tom Cruise’s Reacher film (which I reviewed – you can read that here) is Boo! A Madea Halloween. The Accountant, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Keeping up with the Joneses complete the top five.

OUT IN THEATRES

Inferno

There is so much excitement for this film, which is Dan Brown’s third novel to be adapted for the big screen. And – of course – Tom Hanks is back as Professor Robert Langdon, albeit more vulnerable than he was in his last two Dan Brown films. You’ll also get an re-introduction to Felicity Jones, whose name you may know from The Theory of Everything – a film released back in 2014 to critical acclaim. Jones also received an Oscar nod for her performance in that film, which chronicled Stephen Hawking’s relationship with his now ex-wife, Jane Wilde Hawking.

I went to go see Inferno, and while I had some fun watching it, there were so many plot holes, you could have driven a truck through it. People who really liked the book (I would include myself in this category) will probably find a few things to nit-pick at. You can read my review of the film by clicking here.

Oasis: Supersonic

If you like music, and you love Oasis, this one might be for you. This film was made by Mat Whitecross (who is also responsible for the awesome documentary film, Amy.), and tells the story of the iconic band with extensive unseen archived footage. This is showing in limited release in Metro Vancouver at a handful of Cineplex theatres in Coquitlam, Richmond, and at The Park Theatre in Vancouver. Aggregates score it anywhere between 69 percent and 80 percent.

TRAILERS THAT HAVE PEOPLE TALKING

Logan

With the film’s first bit of footage coming out last week – over a bed of Johnny Cash’s “Hurt,” we’re getting another Wolverine solo film. This will be the last one. With Hugh Jackman playing the titular role, this comes out in March of next year.

Split

It’s a film that, to me – based on this trailer – is either going to be surprisingly good, or unsurprisingly bad, because it’s got M. Night Shyamalan at the helm. Shyamalan has yet to find a solid film in recent memory that’s been a success. James McAvoy stars in this film, which – actually has a bit of a link to Logan. Obviously, Logan is Wolverine’s real name in the X-Men franchise; McAvoy has played the younger version of Professor X (also of X-Men fame) in multiple films, including X-Men: Days of Future Past. The Internet has been making jokes about Professor X losing his mind in this film…so take that and use it as you will.

This film also stars Anya Taylor-Joy; she was in Morgan, which bombed at the box office earlier this year. She also starred in The Witch, an art house horror flick.

OUT ON BLURAY, DVD, DIGITAL DOWNLOAD

Next week you can catch Bad Moms and Star Trek: Beyond. Nine Lives with Kevin Spacey voicing a cat is also available for your home consumption.

As for my Flashback Friday – that comes courtesy of the Close Encounters of the Film Kind podcast, with a bonus episode, in which I give my list of ten Halloween-themed movies to watch! And I promise…not all of them are scary. That episode will be up at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 28th – on this blog for you to listen to – along with the accompanying article!
